New year’s resolutions
20 years ago, the world was preparing for a monumental disaster – the so-called “Millennium Bug” which led to anxiety and the Y2K scare. Thankfully, the 1st January 2000 eased into being with a minimum of fuss.

Now, a new decade begins – and for most of us the glow of a fabulous and exciting new year wears off once we get back to the office! Richard Branson, billionaire entrepreneur, is a great believer in making New Year’s resolutions. It clearly works for him! Perhaps it’s also got something to do with his positive thinking.
Did you know? Only 46% of people who make NY resolutions succeed. Let’s not be in the losing group – let’s make this a WINNING year.
These are the 10 most common resolutions on people’s list. Yup – most of them have been on my list year in / year out.
- Exercise more
- Lose weight
- Get organized
- Learn a new skill or hobby
- Live life to the fullest
- Save more money / spend less money
- Quit smoking
- Spend more time with family and friends
- Travel more

So here are five simple steps (courtesy of Richard Branson) for making a list that you will be able to stick to:
- Write down every single idea you have. No idea is too small, and no idea is too big either. On a notebook, on your phone or on a napkin – it doesn’t matter where, it just matters that you do it.
- Have a few lists. One of far off, outlandish goals and another of manageable tasks to complete every day. This way you can set your vision and be taking steps to get there each day. Make sure you have personal goals as well as business goals. There’s no real separation between work and life, it’s all just living. The same goes for lists.
- Mark off every completed task. There are few more satisfying things than ticking off a job well done. Celebrate your successes (and make more lists of new goals).
- Make your goals measurable so you know if your plans are working. There’s no point setting targets if you don’t know if you are hitting them.
- Share your goals with others. You can help motivate each other further and hold each other to account. But remember that, in the end, you are doing this for yourself.
Good luck everyone – set goals to motivate yourself and if you “fall off the track, get back on as quickly as possible”.
Let’s make 2020 the best year yet.
