The Wedding Expo spent a morning with The Wedding Emporium at The Caar’i Flora Group chatting with Alan Retief about their business, the wedding industry in general and what’s hot for 2020.
TWE: How did you get involved in the wedding industry and when?
Alan: I’ve been involved in the industry for more than 25 years, having followed my parents into the world of events and weddings.
TWE: What is your greatest love and passion for weddings?
Alan: We love to take a simple idea and turn it into an exciting and distinctive floral masterpiece. It is a wonderfully satisfying feeling when the bridal couple see the venue for the first time – the tears of joy and appreciation are just amazing.
TWE: What do you hate when planning a wedding?
Alan: Too many fingers in the pie! Leave things to the professionals to deal with. The biggest problem with pre-wedding stress is over-planning and micro-management.
TWE: What advice do you have for brides when choosing flowers for their wedding?
Alan: Choose flowers that are in season and be realistic about your budget. Be certain of what you are willing to spend and if you want to save some money, do not be over specific about the variety of each bloom. If white is your theme, allow the designer / florist a free reign to give you the best value for your money.
TWE: What are your trend predications for 2020?
Alan: It’s either excessive flowers or go minimalistic with greenery.
TWE: You have built a brand, which takes hard work and determination. What advice do you give to others looking to achieve success?
Alan: It’s total commitment 24/7. With years of experience decorating weddings at churches, outdoor and indoor locations, we have the utmost confidence in our services.
