The Wedding Expo Fashion Spectacular - High on Style!
The Fashion Spectacular at the Coca-Cola dome in Northgate on 5 and 6 September 2009 started with bling and sparkle when Eve's Bridal Wear kicked off the SA Couture Fashion Show.
Veils seem to have made a comeback in different styles simply and stylishly adorning the beautiful gowns by resting on perfectly coiffure heads.
Garnish introduced new styles to their range on the ramp yet kept the colours subtle and classic, perfect for spring. While Guy Granger's range once again stunned audiences with its classic lines and hand stitched finishes.
The grooms were not left out and La Collezione dei Conti men's range had even the bride's realising that choosing a suit was not going to be easy with all the fabulous options!
Sophie Malone changed direction this season adding a new layered style to her more classic gowns.
The colour platinum for the wedding gown is a new addition to the ramps this season and the silhouette has changed from ball gown to a more slender contemporary line.
The finale wowed audiences with the best of ranges. Guy Granger's finale gown was magnificent with a long flowing train and a exquisite beaded detail.
Bride and Co kicked off the ready to wear fashion show with one of their retinue ranges. But it was the flower girl and page boy who got the audience really going with 'oohs' and 'aahs' and sighs of 'oh so cute!'
Then the bride glided down the ramp in a beautiful white gown with full skirt and veil and finished off with a beautiful bouquet.
The Viola Chan designer label which was launched into South Africa this year by Bride and Co was first seen on the ramp at The Wedding Expo. The range was presented by models that came down the ramp in a manner befitting the regal style of the gowns.
International design was what this show was all about as regular to the show Oleg Cassini by Bride and Co was next with white and champagne gowns finished with beading and detail.
Eurosuit showed that colourful waist coasts and ties can ensure that the groom fits in well with the theme of the entire wedding party. MC Graeme Richards also showed off a Eurosuit suit to great effect.
Morgan and Brown's champagne ball gown style with shiny beaded detail brought oohs from the audience while La Collezione dei Conte's ready to wear range illustrated Italian style at it's best.
Lingerie was once more seen on the ramp at The Wedding Expo adding a certain 'je nais se quoi' to the atmosphere. You could almost hear the bride's planning their honeymoon trousseaux!
Maggie Sottero was launched at the show bringing another well established label to the Olivelli range.
Signature pieces from each house made up the spectacular finale of the final fashion show of the day – most notable of these was a fabulous cerise gown by La Collezione die Conti.

Brides-to-Be Flocked to The Wedding Expo
Spring was definitely in the air at the Coca-Cola dome, Northgate during The Wedding Expo weekend (5 and 6 September 2009) where The Wedding Expo hosted the largest bridal show in South Africa. Brides-to-be flocked to the Coca-Cola dome in Northgate to start planning their wedding and to make sure that they got their entry into the box to win a wedding valued at R200, 000.00.
This September, The Wedding Expo, its exhibitors and media partners Sunday Independent, The Star and Pretoria News came together to turn one couple's wedding dreams into reality! The lucky winners were recently engaged couple Jayne Lotter and Matthew Blackmore.
The bi-annual The Wedding Expo now in its 9th year is the largest and most comprehensive bridal show in South Africa which is confirmed by its drawing of the largest range of crème de la crème suppliers in the bridal industry under one roof; these exhibitors include exhibits from cars and cakes to flowers and photographers and beyond.
With two full days of fashion shows, cake design, venue exhibits, sparkling jewellery, beautiful photography and so much more. The venue was brimming with brides-to-be excitedly looking forward to planning their special day. The fashion show arena was packed to capacity during the four fabulous fashion shows where South African couture was highlighted at 11:00 and 14:00 and international designer and ready to wear gowns could be seen at 12:00 and 15:00.

While visually they were introduced to a number of table décor ideas, stationery examples, makeup and hair demonstrations and some even tried on wedding gowns.
The Bride&Co Dress Up Studio made its debut to the thousands of brides attending the weekend-long show, with resounding success. The Wedding Expo a Win for Damelin Students
7 April 2009 - Students from Damelin have this April gained huge value from spending a very busy weekend with the team at The Wedding Expo consumer exhibition.
The students were involved from early Friday morning with exhibitor registration and worked closely with The Wedding Expo team in assisting the exhibitors to set up for South Africa's largest bridal exhibition over the weekend of 4 and 5 April.
On Saturday the students moved between, the information and press office, the newly launched bridal workshops and the managers office where they gained practice in customer care and providing help and information where needed.
Tanya Bardak an Events Management student explained that experiential training is very important for her as a student as she is able to get to know the industry that she is very shortly going to be entering.
Corne Buys and Katja Vormbaum agreed saying that seeing the back end of an exhibition has been eye opening and educational; motivating them to hurry up the year!
"All students must gain a certain number of hour's practical experience which go towards their end of year qualification. This weekend with The Wedding Expo not only gains them expertise but points as well," says Khali Collins, lecturer at Damelin.
"The Wedding Expo is an integral part of the events industry not only as an exhibition organiser but also as the convener of a show which brings participants of the industry together under one roof," says Amanda Cunningham, owner and managing director of The Wedding Expo.
The Wedding Expo is held twice a year at the Coca-Cola dome in Northgate and has become the South African bride's bridal show of choice.

Students to Gain Skills at The Wedding Expo
South Africa's largest bridal exhibition, The Wedding Expo held biannually at the Coca-Cola dome will once again welcome conference, exhibition and event management students from Randburg Damelin College to the show in April.
"We are committed to supporting skills development in the industry and having the students work with us on the show is the most valuable way for us to impart our skills to those who will soon enter the workplace," says Amanda Cunningham, owner and managing director of The Wedding Expo.
"Hands on experience is the best experience a student can get when it comes to managing events and The Wedding Expo not only gives the students an idea of what goes into the making of an exhibition but also exposes them to suppliers in the industry," says Khali Collins, who lectures the students at Damelin.
"All students must gain a certain number of hours practical experience which go towards their end of year qualification. There weekend with The Wedding Expo not only gains them expertise but points as well," says Collins.
Students who worked at the show in September 2008 loved their experience and realised just how much work is involved in an exhibition such as The Wedding Expo, explained Collins.
They were exposed to all areas of the expo from exhibitor registration, consumer information enquiries, trouble shooting with exhibitors and even PR. In April, The Wedding Expo will once again provide the participating students with an insight into the exhibition industry.
"The Wedding Expo is an integral part of the events industry not only as an exhibition organiser but also as the convener of a show which brings participants of the industry together under one roof," says Cunningham.
"It is important to provide those who are entering the industry an all round idea of what they are letting themselves in for. This industry is hard work, exciting and satisfying and one needs to be aware of this before you make a life time commitment to it," says Cunningham.
The next The Wedding Expo is 4 and 5 April 2009 at the Coca-Cola dome, Northgate, Johannesburg. For more information contact 086 111 3997.

Here Comes the Bride The Wedding Expo prepares for another bridal expo
Despite the downturn in the economy and a reduction in spending, brides-to-be will once again converge on The Wedding Expo held at the Coca-Cola dome in Northgate on 4 and 5 April 2009.
"There has been a year on year growth of visitors to The Wedding Expo with figures now reaching 13 000. We don't expect much of a change in these figures for our April show. Couples still get married and tend to spend on the big day even in a slower economy," says Amanda Cunningham managing director of SA's largest bridal expo, The Wedding Expo.
Cunningham continues that whilst some exhibitors are being cautious, most understand the need to continue marketing and sales efforts to remain top of mind with consumers.
The Wedding Expo is held twice yearly at the Coca-Cola dome, Northgate in Johannesburg. Entrance is R70.00 and the show is open between 09:00 and 17:00. Show dates for 2009 are 4 and 5 April and 5 and 6 September.

The Wedding Expo, the Right Place To Reach Growing Number of Brides
The Wedding Expo continues to grow attracting an increasing number of brides-to-be, their grooms and family to find the perfect suppliers to suit their style and often significant budgets.
The Wedding Expo looked at research done by Statistics SA in 2006 on Marriages and Divorces to find out just how much the market has grown and just why it is important for the bridal industry to showcase their products and services at the largest bridal expo in South Africa.
The research from Statistics South Africa showed that marriages were still on the increase with a 26% increase from 1997 to 2006 with a 2.3% increase from 2005 to 2006. This increase underpins the growth in the bridal industry and the increase in visitor numbers to The Wedding Expo.
The April show for The Wedding Expo continues to attract those brides to be looking for their summer wedding. The statistics confirmed this by showing that summer continues to be the most popular month with most weddings taking place between September and December.
And, whilst there is a perception that women are getting married later, statistics show that in fact most women get married at 29. This shows that the target market for public relations, marketing and advertising efforts continues to be between 25 and 35.
The Wedding Expo understand that participating in The Wedding Expo delivers a mutual benefit between the exhibitor and the bride, an opportunity to speak directly to the target audience and develop an emotional connection while simultaneously delivering the bride a convenient opportunity to have all her questions answered. IT is a win-win solution for everyone involved.
What makes The Wedding Expo different? Throughout the eleven show experience in the South African bridal industry The Wedding Expo recognises that our clients time and marketing budget are valuable and has found a niche in the market that provides a valuable marketing experience that is low cost, effective and time efficient.
The Wedding Expo attracts a captive audience of visitors ready to talk to you, touch your product, listen to the entertainment, taste and smell where possible and see beautiful photography and wedding gowns.
Imagine how much time and money it would take to attract 300 clients. As the management company, we are focused on attracting brides-to-be and with over 7,500 brides (12,500 guests) attending The Wedding Expo, it is the most cost effective way to advertise your bridal business.
With 31 270 published divorces in 2006, the market for second weddings is one that provides a secondary market for everyone bringing their product and expertise to The Wedding Expo.
No other form of advertising can offer you the chance to interact with over 300 potential brides-to-be who contribute to the growing number of marriages in South Africa today.

Wedding Inspirations grows page by page
Bi-annual bridal magazine launched in September 2007 gains substance with each issue
Wedding Inspirations, the bi-annual bridal magazine which was launched at The Wedding Expo in September 2007 is preparing to work on the fourth issue of the magazine.
"We are pleased to tell advertisers that the magazine has grown in size since the launch last year and continues with regular features showcasing the best in the industry," says Amanda Cunningham, publisher and editor of the magazine.
Started as a value add item for the bride-to-be visiting The Wedding Expo, the magazine remains a prime resource for her when planning her wedding. Because the magazine includes a planner, budget and notes section, the bride-to-be is able to use this hand bag sized magazine for the duration of her planning which could be for as much as six to eight months.
The magazine also holds a resource guide to suppliers in the industry all of which the bride-to-be would have seen at The Wedding Expo. This invaluable section of the magazine reaffirms the long life it has with the bride-to-be and just why the magazine should be top of mind with advertisers.
The feature spreads have developed and matured since the first issue and now include fabulous pictorial spreads of cakes, flowers and fashion including wedding gowns and grooms attire each showcased on one full page.
"The venue feature is a popular place for venues to showcase their properties and includes technical detail about the property. Other popular sections of the magazine for the reader are the 'tips from the experts' and Dr Beth who offers sage advice to couples before they get married," says Cunningham continuing a brief overview of the magazine's content.
The magazine which has a cover price of R29.95 is distributed free of charge to visiting brides-to-be at The Wedding Expo as a value-add for the visitor. The magazine was also available for sale at the Soweto Festival in September 2008 and a number have been distributed directly from the publishers by request from the consumer.
The next issue of the magazine will be available at The Wedding Expo over the weekend of 5 and 6 April 2009. Current and past issues are available online

Get the most out of bridal shows
By Amanda Cunningham, managing director for The Wedding Expo
To get the most out of your bridal show experience, get there early and plan to stay for the day. Don't just walk past the stand holders and pick up information, talk to them as this can save you time with appointments later on.
Personality and 'clicking' with your supplier plays a huge part in the success of your planning. You can find out very quickly which suppliers to add to your shopping list.
You need to make a personal connection at the show so don't be put off a supplier if they are busy with someone else; wait for them to finish with the previous bride – remember you plan to stay all day.
If a stand is very busy make a note of it and move on, you can go back to it later – remember you are there all day!
When you do talk to them find out if they are available for your date and what their cost structures are as this will save you time and disappointment.
Remember that bridal expos can be as overwhelming for the stand holder as for the bride so if you don't get their attention immediately remember that every wedding supplier at the show would like to talk to you and every bride there (which isn't realistic) but they are there to win your business.
Keep an eye out for competitions on the stands and listen for announcements of larger more inclusive competitions as winning them can save you money!
If you don't have a wedding planning book, keep your eye out for stands selling these and also check any magazines etc, given out at the show. Some shows like The Wedding Expo give a free bridal magazine to each bride-to-be; this includes a wedding planner, budget and notes section which can prove very handy for the duration of your planning.
Make time to attend any workshops being offered as these can provide you with great ideas and insight into planning your special day.
Don't make a final decision on your wedding gown until you have watched the fashion shows for the day; take notes as you watch so that you know which dress was your favourite and who the designer was – you can visit the designer after the show and book time with them for fittings.
Bring your fiancé with you particularly if he is involved in the planning. If you meet a supplier you really like, you can make decisions on the spot, pay deposits and secure your date in their calendar.

Distribution partners for Wedding Inspirations increases print run
Wedding Inspirations' The Wedding Expo magazine will see a print run increased to 30 000 and available free through selected Galaxy and Co, Bride and Co and Eurosuit retail outlets after The Wedding Expo on 5 and 6 April 2008 where 10 000 free copies will again go to the bride-to-be visiting the show.
These distribution partnerships mean that Wedding Inspirations will be similar to the combined distribution figure of the top three paid for bridal publications in South Africa. It is therefore a must for all wedding industry suppliers who are serious about promoting their business to their primary target audience – the bride-to-be.
Statistics garnered from research done at previous The Wedding Expo shows has confirmed that 60% of visitors are the bride-to-be with the balance made up of the groom-to-be, the mother of the bride and bride's maid etc.
"We are excited about these partnerships and increased distribution as this immediately offers our advertisers more value," says Amanda Cunningham owner and managing director of The Wedding Expo and publisher and editor of the magazine.
The growth and development of the magazine comes from Cunningham's belief that innovation and creativity are the key to the success of any consumer show and The Wedding Expo strives to remain at the forefront of the wedding industry.
Advertising and editorial opportunities will be open to any brand or product needing to reach the young woman embarking on a new life, namely the bride-to-be irrespective of whether they have a presence at the show or not.

The Wedding Expo Weds Two Strangers for Kaya FM
The Wedding Expo has partnered as one of the sponsors with Kaya FM 95.9 in challenging the boundaries of social norms and proposing that two strangers assisted by a panel of experts and Kaya FM listeners take the plunge and get married, meeting each other for the very first time at the alter with their ‘social experiment’ - 2 Strangers and a Wedding.
2 Strangers and a Wedding is not a game or competition, there are real questions, real decisions and real consequences much like the reality programmes which are regularly aired on our television. Kaya FM explains that this is a social experiment where every decision has been carefully thought through. Not a frivolous marketing ploy to entertain listeners.
“This is a first for radio in South Africa and the subject fits perfectly into what The Wedding Expo is all about love and marriage. Which is why I didn’t hesitate to be involved with 2 Strangers and a Wedding,” says Amanda Cunningham, owner and managing director.
“In addition, this type of sponsorship is exactly the innovative PR and marketing approach that keeps The Wedding Expo at the forefront of the bridal industry.”
Cunningham believes that continued marketing innovation and keeping up to date with general marketing initiatives is vital to ongoing consumer awareness and success of The Wedding Expo, and thereby the South African wedding industry as a whole. The SA wedding industry is a multi-million rand industry which is made up of many small entrepreneurs, small businesses and of course, the larger players in the market. This industry encompasses at least 100 different market segments including travel and tourism, food and catering, dress designers and couturiers, flowers and décor, hotels, etc.
“Sponsorship such as this is an essential part of our exhibitor’s promotional campaigns and in the case of 2 Strangers and a Wedding, the return on investment for the exhibitors/sponsors with editorial type coverage will be enormous due to the length and size of the campaign,” explains Cunningham.
Stretching the definition of marketing promotion, Castle Lite sponsored the 2 Strangers and a Wedding social experiment in a move set to position the brand as a unique proposition in the beer category. The unconventional brand has moved beyond print and broadcast media to embrace non-traditional activations that offer unique opportunities to connect with customers. In using an original promotion such as this Castle Lite is again highlighting the quirky, unique aspect of its brand personality says Amanda Dlamini, Castle Lite Assistant Brand Manager.
The social experiment
Jozi based radio station Kaya FM's 2 Strangers and a Wedding is the most unique social experiment ever to be staged on South African radio. It involves 8 weeks of finding two people using the power of radio, who meet each other for the first time at the altar. Since 1998, 2 Strangers and a Wedding has been run in 21 countries and has been a resounding success.
The pursuit to find Joburg's perfect match started on 1 April with the search for the perfect bride and groom. Over 100 male applicants were screened (credit & criminal checks) and from these a total of 20 prospective grooms were selected. Those 20 underwent further lifestyle checks (personality, medical & HIV checks) and were then interviewed by a panel of experts. Based on this a final choice of five prospective grooms were chosen. They then underwent further interviews with marriage guidance, counsellors and psychologists, while family members, friends and ex-girlfriends were interviewed as well.
The groom has already been chosen and he has chosen his bride, proposing to her live on Kaya FM on 21 May. The hard work for the sponsors of the R1.5 million rand wedding kicks in from this date with the preparations for the day needing to be finalised.
The judging panel is made up of Kaya FM, umKaya listeners and the following group of specialists who are all experts in their field:

Press Release April 2008
10 Successful shows for The Wedding Expo South Africa's largest biannual bridal exhibition celebrated its 10th successful exhibition at the Coca-Cola dome in Northgate over the weekend of 5 and 6 April.
Brides-to-be poured into the Coca-Cola dome in Northgate over the weekend of 5 and 6 April for The Wedding Expo which is well known as the best one stop shop for the bridal industry. This expo which has been growing in size each show can once again report an increase of 30% in visitors to a fantastic 13 000 in April.
Amanda Cunningham, owner and managing director of The Wedding Expo believes that the continued success of the show is a direct result of the ever growing demand by the bride-to-be to source professional suppliers for their wedding day.
This has been confirmed by previous research which has shown that 60% of the visitors to the show are the bride-to-be; there to see, touch, taste, meet with and make decisions about how their wedding day will be.
"We have expanded the show with demand from the industry which has grown fantastically over the last 7 years. Companies in the bridal industry range from very small one person operations to larger corporate companies and each see the value of face to face communication with their clients which is what each The Wedding Expo brings to the market," says Cunningham.
New at the April show The South African Designer Show The show in April saw a number of launches at the show and with the fashion shows attracting 1,000 people watching each show it was a wonderful opportunity for the fabulous talent in South Africa to show their unique designs to a captive audience.
The eight designers each showcased nine dresses culminating in a finale dress which they accompanied onto the ramp. These designers included Christa Buitendag of Christa B Haute Couture, Gerhard Meiring Couture, Kristin Masters of Garnish, Guy Granger, Sophie Malone and Eve Levinsohn of Eve Bridal Wear.
The second fashion show of the day attracted the same number of people packed around the fashion ramp to catch a glimpse of their favourite dress. After the show brides-to-be eagerly explored the rest of the exhibition to find the perfect cake, invitation and other suppliers.
2 Strangers and A Wedding with Kaya FM and Castle Lite Also launched at The Wedding Expo was 2 Strangers & A Wedding, brought to you by Kaya FM and Castle Lite. The Wedding Expo has partnered with Kaya FM to sponsor the wedding portion of this unique event.
In a unique South African first, Kaya FM and Castle Lite are pushing the boundaries of our social norms and proposing that two strangers – assisted by a panel of experts and the listeners for compatibility– not only would be prepared to take the chance of getting married but that this experiment could work. This is not a gag, a joke or a stunt. We will:
- Find two complete strangers, a guy and a girl.
- Get the guy to propose to the girl live on-air.
- Have them meet for the very first time at the altar and marry them.
The pursuit to find the city's perfect match will start with a search for the perfect groom. Dozens of auditions will take place from hundreds of entrants. After a whole range of personality tests, interviews with marriage guidance counsellors, psychologists and then a vote by the Kaya FM audience, we will finally find our groom.
The Soweto Festival In addition, it was announced that The Wedding Expo will be at The Soweto Festival which runs from 24 to 28 September 2008 and is the biggest annual event that takes place in Soweto.
"Over the years the Soweto Festival has seen major growth, and having The Wedding Expo on board this year is certainly a reflection of bigger and greater things to come" comments Adele Lucas, Managing Director of ALP. "Weddings are big business in Soweto and as we attract thousands of aspirant consumers to the Festival this is a natural move for The Wedding Expo. These two strong brands will complement each other very well."

“The Art of Giving Tin”
The Wedding Expo is thrilled to be celebrating it's 10th Anniversary Exhibition in April 2008
The traditional gift for celebrating a 10th anniversary is a gift of TIN. The modern is a gift of ART.
The Wedding Expo team has deliberated for some time now about how to celebrate 10 hugely successful exhibitions with you the Wedding Industry, and we’ve finally come to a decision.
We have decided to CELEBRATE THE ART OF GIVING TIN.
Whilst throwing a party for the industry is always a fun thing to do, there are people out there in need of more than we are. The Wedding Expo has chosen to work closely with The Bright Lights Feeding Scheme and a Paediatric HIV Clinic in Alexandra called the Phatsima Khanya Children’s Clinic, meaning ‘Place of Bright Light”.
The clinic offers comprehensive HIV care for children aged 4 weeks to 14 years, including HIV testing, monitoring and management of children with HIV, provision of Antiretroviral Treatment (ART) when necessary, and ongoing psychosocial counselling & treatment support groups. All services, including ART are provided free of charge to all patients. They currently look after about 350 children, of whom about 2/3 are on ART, but sadly their patient numbers continue to increase steadily.
Whilst the clinic is able to look after them medically, many of them simply do not get enough food so a feeding scheme has been started to provide monthly food parcels to their patients. The parcels cost approximately R100 and include tinned foods (pilchards, meat, baked beans etc), mielie meal, rice, peanut butter, tea, sugar, soap, toothpaste, washing powder etc.
The food parcels are given to the children when they attend the clinic for consultations or to collect their ARV’s every month. The impact has been enormous. Apart from providing nutrition, attendance at the clinic has improved significantly.
Currently there are about 200 parcels per month, but sadly they need double this amount to feed everyone.
The Wedding Expo will be donating R20 000.00 and I would urge you, our exhibitors, to either donate R100 or to put a food parcel together and bring it to the Expo this weekend and we will deliver them to Phatsima Khanya Children’s Clinic.
Should you wish to participate, you can be assured that 100% of your donation goes to the children. There are no administration fees. You will also not need to feel locked in to any long-term commitment.
I sincerely hope we can make this a huge donation with thanks from the South African Wedding Industry.

10th Wedding Expo Launches Local Designer Show
[Johannesburg 10 February 2008] The 10th Wedding Expo will honour eight South African designers with the launch of an exclusive couture show at the expo in April 2008.
The change in the fashion show line up at The Wedding Expo is testament to owner and managing director Amanda Cunningham’s belief that South Africa has so much to offer the world and that by honouring local couturiers the industry can only hope to grow in quality and reputation.
For the last ten expos, the fashion shows have been a wonderful showcase for every wedding gown supplier at the exhibition whether they are local or international, off the peg or designer made. With the fashion shows attracting 1000 people watching each show it is a wonderful opportunity for the fabulous talent in South Africa to show their unique designs to a captive audience.
There has been a marked increase in the number of local couturiers over the last eight years and the industry is continuing to see innovative young couturiers coming into the market making the choices for the bride-to-be ever more exciting.
The Wedding Expo is using this new separate designer show to showcase local talent and to emphasise the difference between off the peg and couturier wedding gowns. Whilst both options are immensely popular with the bride-to-be, it is the uniqueness of an exclusive ‘once-off’ wedding gown which will now be highlighted on the ramp.
The eight designers will each show nine dresses culminating in a finale dress which they will accompany onto the ramp. Already confirmed as participating are Christa Buitendag of Christa B Haute Couture, Gerhard Meiring Couture, Kristin Masters of Garnish, Guy Granger, Sophie Malone and Eve Levinsohn of Eve Bridal Wear.
“The Wedding Expo has been going since 2001 and has provided a platform with the successful Fashion Spectacular Shows for a lot of bridal gown designers and suppliers to showcase their ranges. The new fashion show does not detract from these shows but rather serves to highlight the fantastic design talent that South Africa has,” says Cunningham.
Garnish designer Kristin Masters is excited about the opportunity to showcase her designs as it provides the bride-to-be with the opportunity to identify with local designers and their designs.
“I am extremely excited and overcome by the possibilities that are imminent, not only for me as a designer but for everyone in the wedding industry. I see a time of great innovation and creativity ahead and am eager to be part of it,” says Masters.
Gerhard Meiring agrees and says that as a designer one is always working with new people, fabrics and with new ideas to make dreams come true.
Meiring believes that the new show will drive awareness of the amazing work done by talented local couturiers and that imported options don’t always give the bride-to-be the best dress for their day.
“I also believe that competition is the best way for an industry to get better and this showing of eight South African designers will encourage everyone to up their game,” says Meiring.
“It is this willingness of our exhibitors to move forward with us allowing the exhibition to be innovative that accounts for the success of The Wedding Expo which attracts over 10000 people through the doors at the Coca-Cola dome,” says Cunningham.
The Wedding Expo SA Designer Fashion Show will launch at the expo on Saturday 5 April at 11:00 with the second showing on Sunday 6 April at 15:00. The Wedding Expo is held at the Coca-Cola dome in Northgate, Johannesburg and costs R60.00 to enter.

Press Release June 2007
Wedding Expo launches visitor magazine
Wedding Expo, Gauteng's largest consumer wedding exhibition attracting over 10,000 visitors will launch a new visitor magazine at Wedding Expo in September 2007.
The visitor magazine to be titled Inspirations is aimed at offering more value to the Wedding Expo exhibitor and visitor and will replace the current catalogue.
"We look forward to the launch of this magazine and to dealing with issues around the big day and beyond" says Amanda Cunningham, Wedding Expo owner and managing director.
Inspirations will provide articles and information that the bride to be is looking for and the editorial team will be looking to exhibitors for editorial content as well as including more general articles and photographic features. There will also be opportunities for exhibitors to enhance their presence at Wedding Expo by advertising their company and product in the magazine.
Cunningham believes that innovation and creativity are key to the success of any consumer show and Wedding Expo strives to be at the forefront in the wedding industry. The May show saw an enhanced road poster campaign the success of which was seen in the 33% increase in visitor numbers in May over the September 2006 show.
Now Inspirations continues that creativity, "a survey conducted amongst visitors at the May Wedding Expo showed 60% of visitors are brides to be with the balance being made up of the groom to be, friends and family. We will now we will be giving the bride to be something she will keep and use throughout the planning of her special day," says Cunningham.
Inspirations editorial team is made up of Amanda Cunningham and Janet Gericke who will act as publisher and editor respectively and will be available to the 10 000 visitors at Wedding Expo which will once again be at the Coca Cola dome in Northgate on 01 and 02 September 2007.

Road posters draw 33% more visitors for Wedding Expo
Wedding Expo's exhibition at the Coca-Cola dome in Northgate, Johannesburg during the first weekend in May saw the show grow its visitor numbers by 33% over the September 2006 show and it's all down to an enhanced road poster campaign.
A survey of visitors to Wedding Expo showed that 32% of visitors who participated were made aware of the show from the road poster campaign a survey reveals.
"We enhanced both our advertising and editorial PR campaigns for this show and have seen the result of better visibility and awareness, " says owner and managing director Amanda Cunningham.
The survey also revealed that word of mouth plays a huge part of making visitors aware of the show, followed then by radio and print editorial coverage.
Focusing on the type of visitor to Wedding Expo, the survey revealed that 60% of visitors are brides-to-be with the balance being made up of the groom-to-be, friends and family.
"This was not surprising as the wedding industry continues to grow and an increasing number of brides-to-be value the opportunity to do all their 'shopping' in one venue. In addition, Wedding Expo attracts the best suppliers in the industry and the visitors trust the quality that Wedding Expo has to offer," says Cunningham.
Wedding Expo was launched at the Sandton Convention Centre in May 2002 with 77 exhibitors and 3200 visitors. It was this first show explains Cunningham which set the high standards for exhibitors which are still expected today. "In order to have the elegant and stylish show I had envisaged I had to attract the crème de la crème of the wedding industry.
"We achieved this in 2002 and I am pleased to say, we continue to do so. Wedding Expo exhibitors have proven track records and are highly regarded by the wedding industry as a whole.
"Not only do we continue to attract high quality new exhibitors, 90% of our original exhibitors are still with Wedding Expo," comments Cunningham.
Wedding Expo will once again be at the Coca Cola dome in Northgate on 01 and 02 September 2007.

Wedding Expo captivates
Girls are captivated by the dream of planning their wedding and so it was not surprising that Wedding Expo held at the Coca-Cola dome in Northgate, Johannesburg over the first weekend in May captivated thousands of brides-to-be. Wedding Expo which is held twice a year this time attracted over 10,000 people.
The more than 250 spectacular exhibitor stands were as unique as the companies that designed them and as individual as each bride-to-be who visited them. Photographers displayed their work in quirky and exciting ways, cake makers made visitors drool over their creations (not to mention the smell of chocolate), and dress designers had visitors wanting each new dress they saw. Make up artists were on hand to advise and to suggest wonderful make-up for the time of day, the location and the seasons.
The there were the venues which were ready to help every each couple imagine just what their day would be like on a beach, on the side of a mountain, on a wine farm or in the bush surrounded by our loved ones and a the huge African sky.

The Wedding Expo Fashion Spectaculars were once again truly spectacular and echoed the trends that designers have been talking about recently – a return to the classic wedding dress. The Fashion Spectaculars are where every brides wish to be a princess is suddenly made possible – creation after wonderful creation appeared on the catwalk watched by hundreds of newly engaged couples. Press Release April 2007
Wedding Expo the only bridal exhibition serious about making any wedding the perfect wedding
From a very young age a girl dreams about what she will wear, what she will look like on her wedding day; how many bridesmaids she will have and even dreams about her best friend being that very special confidante standing next to her on her wedding day. Perhaps she even dreams about the handsome prince who will sweep her off her feet.
So, it is not surprising that the wedding industry has grown into the giant it is today and why South Africa's largest and award winning bridal exhibition, Wedding Expo, held twice a year in Johannesburg draws massive crowds. A record 8 000 people visited the more than 200 exhibitors over the two day weekend in September last year which was an increase of 500 visitors over the April 2006 show.
Wedding Expo is drawing these fantastic numbers because it is the only bridal exhibition which is serious about the needs of the bride and groom to be and of ensuring that anyone leaving the exhibition at the end of the day or weekend will have all their details for their perfect wedding all but finalised.
It's all in the budget Planning a wedding is not an easy task, brides-to-be generally spend months working tirelessly to realise that dream and to ensure that she has the most memorable wedding. It is therefore important that couples tying the knot this year will be exposed to the best on offer at Wedding Expo and will get a guiding hand in planning what could be a very stressful experience.
Wedding Expo attracts the crème de la crème of the wedding industry to exhibit and with a focus on every detail of planning a wedding brides-to-be have access to over 20 designers specialising in creating the perfect wedding gown, as well as specialists in décor, accessories, photography and catering.
One-stop-shopping Launching at Wedding Expo Bride & Co is a brand new concept offering an innovative shopping option for modern brides-to-be: a one-stop bridal shop (spanning over 1200 square meters) filled with a vast selection of designer wedding gowns in every size as well as every item to make sure that the bride's big day runs smoothly.
Bride & Co offers the convenience of one-stop shopping with head-to-toe dressing, on-site alterations, special financing options, gown preservation services and coordinating ensembles for the entire bridal party. The company is uniquely positioned to offer exclusive colour coordination for almost every wedding detail, from gown accents and accessories, to bridesmaid fashions and formalwear, to the groom's suit and tuxedo, to invitations and gifts, to limo services and much more.
Also launching at Wedding Expo is the addition of the Bride & Co Fashion Couture Extravaganza showcasing the very best of what Bride & Co have to offer including examples from their Oleg Cassini Collection. The collection is characterised by timeless, elegant gowns, fashioned from luxurious fabrics, with intricate hand embellishments of exquisite beading, lace and embroidery. Keeping true to his goal of making women look and feel their most beautiful, the designer's legacy lives on through this exquisite collection.
Table décor, tick. Flowers, tick. Cake, tick. Clean straight lines are also reflected in wedding décor. Table settings are following the elegant and sometimes glamorous feel with less making more of a statement. Square tables and natural colours are in vogue. Small details are where the secret lies, with detail on chairs and cutlery.
What to do about those flowers? Carnations believe it or not, are coming back in style, but stay away from the crazy colours, say florists. There are basically two looks to go for. Soft mixed country-style arrangements or very modern structured ones, such as single stems in individual vases.
A first for Wedding Expo in May is the new innovative concept from Petals in Porcelain. Brand new to South Africa are bouquets, buttonholes, corsages and head pieces made from a formula called Porcelana or Cold Porcelain. Each flower is hand crafted to look as fragile and as real as the original. They are then cured, hand painted and glazed and put together as a bouquet to which fresh water pearls, Swarovski crystals and satin ribbon are added. Each bouquet is presented in a beautiful box on a pillow of satin or velvet with the brides name and date of her wedding on the inside.
Says owner Moraig DeWit, "Our flowers are a lasting keepsake and memory of a bride's special day. They can be used afterwards as a centrepiece to any elegant dinner party or box-framed and given a place on the wall of her home."
One can't forget about the cake. Deon Swarts owner of The Cake Genie says that he is seeing a trend for the different. "Rich deep colours are in like wine red and burnt orange but so too are modern contemporary colours like lime and lemon. Brides are no longer looking for the standard three tier cake; I am being asked for different shapes, something out of this world – which is exciting, it allows for creativity."
I do Staying with trends, jewellery is very feminine and sparkly and for the groom it is plain wedding bands or special hardwood inlayed pieces for uniqueness. Custom jeweller Ivan Mrkusic says, "There seems to be great demand, especially among guys, for the industrial and masculine look that oxidized silver and wood provide in my pieces. Couples are looking for something unique with wedding rings, something that nobody else has," says Mrkusic.
Mrkusic's distinctive range is unmistakably hand made but displays an air of precision one would think could only be achieved by a machine. This makes him the perfect jeweller for a couple to engage with when looking for their special rings. "I think couples really enjoy sitting down with a custom designer and manufacturer such as me to add their own input to rings which ultimately they may wear for the rest of their lives and one which has special and significant meaning," comments Mrkusic.
Relax, bond, relax, …. A relatively new fashion is the pre-wedding dinner where the bride and grooms families can get to know each other before the big day. Kievets Kroon Country Estate have perfected this and provide an elegant setting where the bride and groom can impress the new family with a six course fine dining experience in a private venue, adjacent to the wine cellar. Once friendships have been cemented and wedding plans have been finalised, the bridal party can retire to luxurious accommodation on the estate and enjoy a sumptuous buffet breakfast the following morning. The great thing is that Kievets Kroon Country Estate is just 40 minutes from Johannesburg and 10 minutes from Pretoria.
Staying with relaxing is the wedding night and it makes sense that no matter where the wedding takes place, the first night accommodation for the bride and groom be taken care of by professionals such as the Park Hyatt; here you experience the ultimate in luxury with a touch of African Renaissance. Situated in the chic suburb of Rosebank it is the perfect location if you are leaving to catch a plane on your honeymoon, departing on a self-drive honeymoon or simply going home together.
Talking of honeymoons, you can't go wrong with Glenburn Lodge, Kloofzicht and Umbhaba all part of the Guvon Hotels group. A honeymoon including all three of these spectacular properties will take you to a peaceful valley in the Lowveld were all visitors vow to return. The Sabie River Valley lies at the edge of the escarpment of the misty Drakensberg Mountains which towers above subtropical bushveld below. On a hillside overlooking this valley lies Umbhaba Lodge where the accommodation is surrounded by cascading waterfalls, exquisite landscaped gardens and abundant bird life.
Follow this with the magnificent Kloofzicht situation on the banks of the Blaauwbank River, overlooking trout filled dams with a view of the Swartkops mountain range. Or perhaps you would prefer sister property and neighbour Glenburn Lodge, also set in the tranquillity of the Swartkops Mountains on the banks of the Blaauwbank and Crocodile Rivers.
what's hot, what's new All in all Wedding Expo is definitely the perfect place to find the perfect venue, confectioner, designer, wedding planner to suit your needs. There are a myriad of things to think about when planning a wedding and the groom-to-be is traditionally responsible for wedding rings, honeymoons, travel arrangements, vehicles, financing and insurance.
Now Wedding Expo has created the perfect place for him to explore - The Grooms Gallery which was launched in September 2006. Whilst the bride-to-be is deciding on wedding gowns, designers and other details which the groom is not supposed to be party to, he can explore the stands around the groom's gallery.
Champagne view of Fashion Spectacular The champagne bar is the perfect place to take a break from the many fabulous things that a bride and groom-to-be will experience at Wedding Expo. A glass of champagne is a perfect addition to a wonderful day and may help while mulling over venues, cake designs or simply which champagne is the best to choose.
Conveniently located close to the fashion ramp it is an ideal spot to sit and watch the fabulous designer creations floating down the ramp.
Wedding Expo is at the Coca Cola Dome Northgate from 05 to 06 May 2007. Don't miss the opportunity to plan that spectacular wedding over one weekend.

Wedding Expo a tried and tested formula
Wedding Expo is a great example of a tried and tested formula for marketing one's business because it gives exhibitors what it wants; face to face communication with their consumers.
So said Wedding Expo managing director Amanda Cunningham last week when addressing exhibitors at the Wedding Expo May 2007 show briefing. The event held for the first time at luxury hotel, wedding and conference venue - Fabz Estate was well attended by both exhibitors and prospective exhibitors alike.
Guest speaker Gary Corin, marketing director for Specialised Events was invited to speak about the positives of exhibitions reminded the audience of the 'other' four P's. People, physical evidence, process and productivity but said that he was not there to talk about the academics of marketing but rather about getting the most out of exhibitions by integrating efforts to ensure that whatever an exhibitor does entices visitors to the show.
"The concentrated marketing an exhibition provides exhibitors means that visitors have already pre-qualified themselves. If you combine what you are doing - integrated marketing – exhibitions will bring a measurable value which can surprise you."
Corin went onto caution that as an exhibition is eye to eye marketing you shouldn't get involved in the front end of the exhibition if you are not good with people. "Nothing must get in the way of you and your prospect. If you are not passionate about being on your stand, find someone who is."
Cunningham supported Corin's comment adding that exhibitors need to think carefully about their marketing and sales strategies and should take the opportunity to be involved in sponsorship opportunities and to support the marketing, advertising and PR efforts of an event such as Wedding Expo.
"We achieved just over R2 million's worth of coverage for the September show and are hoping to exceed that with the May show. In addition, we have broadened our advertising, poster and street pole campaigns and included a Wedding Expo branded car into the mix it makes sense therefore that exhibitors 'piggy back' on our efforts," says Cunningham.
The car which will be travelling around Johannesburg on various routes over the weeks leading up to the show in May is supported by a "Spot the Car" competition being run on the Wedding Expo website with the prize sponsored by Bride and Co.
There are a number of new exhibitors in the May show the biggest of which is Bride and Co who will be launching their unique concept store at Wedding Expo. Bride and Co which is a brand new concept offering an innovative shopping option for brides-to-be.
With the exception of a change in stand builders to Oasys, all suppliers remain unchanged and include WAP Point Solutions, Lodge Sibumbene Security, Dr Clean and Expo Screens.
Wedding Expo which attracted over 8,500 visitors to the September 2006 show has more than 270 exhibitors which include cakes, catering, cookware, dance studios, décor and candle hire, designers and wedding gowns, event specialist planners, flowers, gifts and bonbonnieries, hair and beauty, invitations and stationery, jewellers, lawyers, limousines, marquees, menswear, music and entertainment, photographers, travel, venues, videographers and vineyards.

Spring Inspired Spectacular
Wedding Expo September 2006 Fashion Spectacular featured the latest in wedding gowns and summer fashions for brides and grooms which is why you cannot afford to miss out on the May 2007 if you are looking for that perfect dress.
To give you an idea of the delights you will find at the May Fashion Spectacular, we look back to September and a spring inspired spectacular.
André Croukamp's pink creation featured an 'old' pink satin bodice with lightly beaded lace and a voluptuous floral print, clock-out skirt - perfect for a morning garden wedding.
Lady Marmalaide showed a brilliant white dress with a tight bodice beaded with Swarovski crystals and pearls, and a puffy skirt. It is a classic look for the young bride. Also featured was a light rose pink gown, with a soft layered skirt that glided across the ramp - think rose petals strewn on a freshly cut lawn.
The classic white wedding dress will stay forever, but pink still seems to be en vogue. Not by designers' choice though, it is the colour brides still yearn for. Very hot this season is lace, crystals, pearls and a more toned down feminine and simpler look, with earthy colours starting to make an appearance.
First-timer on Fashion Spectacular, Dorothy Couture, moved away from the soft pastels and showed off A-line garments in creams and whites with accents of copper, bronze, brown and burnt orange, as well as big bold copper flowers for 'umf'! Modest beading in copper gave garments that little bit of sparkle.
Designer Guy Granger says: "Less is more this season and brides must wear simpler lines." His straight-cut simple champagne and off-white dresses with light pearl and diamante beading echoed this belief. Copper and rich brown hues also featured in his designs for a style that is pure elegance.
For the groom, the answer is definitely pin-stripes and very long jackets. Morning suits with tails and frocks are the look. The tones are natural with the odd burst of colour in ties and breast-pocket handkerchiefs to match the bride's dress. Dark navy and black with crisp white shirts are also favourites.
"The trend for men is long jackets, a bit more baggy pants and a looser fit. It's moving away from the tight pencil trousers," says designer Gerald C.
Brides' hair, according to Willie Louw, should be sleek and smooth with clean lines. Hair should be worn up with nothing in the neck. Natural looking curls are also accepted, but no tiaras at all. "Crystals and pearls are big this season and can be worked into the hair for effect." Louw adds.
The ladies at Estée Lauder, responsible for the models' make-up at the show, say the look is more natural. "It is the 'sun-kissed' look with light eye shadow and bronzer everywhere". Lips are light with no prominent reds. Berry pink is however a classic that will stay.
